Cory Davis, 56, had been stoking the coals in her cast-iron stove when she heard something explode and felt pain in her left calf, reports Peninsula Daily News.
Davis, of Sekiu, Washington, said she initially thought she was struck by a hot coal.
However, she later discovered that she had been hit by a 22-gauge shotgun shell accidentally placed in the stove along with some newspaper after a case of the ammunition had spilled in her home about a month ago.
"There's always that one problem stray," she said, adding: "And of course, it got me."
Medical staff later cleaned the shallow wound and no further treatment was required.
"How many people get shot by [their] stove?" Davis said, admitting that she was in some pain but found the incident amusing.
