The Russian Prime Minister asked officials working on new satellite global positioning system GLONASS whether he could use the technology to keep track of black Labrador Koni.
A 170g collar was then prepared containing the technology, which was fitted around the dog's neck.
"She is wagging her tail. That means she likes it," Putin said.
GLONASS will eventually be available to the public.
