A South Wales Council has told its staff to be careful when using the word 'British'.

According to Plaid Cymru-led Caerphilly's equality handbook, people from Scotland, Wales and Ireland "resist" being described in such a manner.

"The idea of 'British' implies a false sense of unity," reads the book, which is supplied by the Valleys Race Equality Council (Valrec).

Monmouth Conservative MP David Davies described the idea that it is offensive to be referred to as British as "shocking".

He said: "The fact of the matter is that there are millions of people across the world trying to be British and it shouldn't be offensive to describe people in that way.

"Valrec seems to be adopting a rather nationalist agenda instead of using their position to promote a sense of unity across the British Isles, which is something we desperately need."
