Barack Obama has been offered one of Peru's national dogs.

The President-elect told his two daughters in his victory speech that he would reward them with a new puppy. However, his eldest daughter Malia is allergic to most breeds.

Claudia Galvez, director of the Friends of the Peruvian Hairless Dog Association, has now offered one of the pets to the first family.

"They do not cause any type of allergy and are very friendly and sweet," she said.

"We want to give a male puppy to Obama's daughters, so they get to experience all the joys of having a dog but without any allergies."

However, Ms Galvez said the dog would have to be called Machu Picchu in order to promote Peru's top tourist attraction.
