New research has found that the number of British people who believe in UFOs, aliens and the supernatural outnumbers those who follow religion, reports The Daily Telegraph.

In a survey to mark the DVD release of The X Files: I Want To Believe, 54% of 3,000 people polled said they believe in God, while 58% revealed that they believe in the supernatural.

37% reportedly claimed that the basis for their belief system is aliens and ghosts.

Some cited recently-released government files which revealed that that there was a 1991 sighting that the military was unable to explain.

It said: "In the absence of any clear evidence which could be used to identify the object, it is our intention to treat this sighting like that of any other Unidentified Flying Object."
