A six-year-old boy has been found carrying a loaded .45-caliber pistol in his pocket at school.

The weapon was discovered after the first grade student was sent to the principal's office because his "pants were sagging", according to San Bernadino County's sheriff officials.

The boy's father, Michael Lewis, who has a history of felony, was arrested for receiving stolen property and being a felon in possession of a firearm, after police realised that the gun was reported missing following a burglary in November.

Investigators said that the child had taken the pistol after spotting it in the trunk of his dad's car.

"The child will be expelled," said a sheriff spokesperson. "We don't know what his intentions were. We don't know whether he was just trying to be cool and have it.

"But it's the district's policy that if you bring a gun onto campus, you're expelled."
