US inmates grow food to save money

Sandusky County sheriff Kyle Overmyer got the idea to start a prison vegetable garden after he was ordered to reduce the expenditure by $75,000, The AP reports.
Overmyer, who previously banned pancakes from jail meals to cut costs, allows low-risk convicts to mow lawns and carry out other chores on the acre.
The garden was planted three weeks ago and is expected to provide fresh fruit and vegetables for the prisoners.
One inmate said that everyone will enjoy the fresh food because budget reductions "have made meals less appetising".
