The unnamed couple had hoped to visit the Italian island of Capri but accidentally ended up in the industrial town of Carpi in the northern province of Emilia Romagna.
Officials said that the middle-aged duo only realised their error when they asked the local tourist office how to get to the famous Blue Grotto sea cave.
Regional government spokesman Giovanni Medici told Reuters: "It's the first time something like this has happened. It's hard to understand how they managed it. I mean, Capri is an island.
"They were surprised, but not angry. They got back in the car and started driving south."
Last year, a honeymooning couple were stranded halfway up a 2,755ft mountain when they followed the instructions on their GPS system.
