British people are avoiding sex and stairs because they are too lazy, a new study has found.

According to a poll carried out by the Nuffield healthcare chain, three quarters of couples feel too tired for passion in the bedroom by the end of the day.

Meanwhile, nearly two thirds of those surveyed would take a lift rather than climb two flights of stairs, and one in three would not bother to run to catch a bus.

The survey also discovered that one in six people would prefer to watch a TV programme they hated rather than getting up from the sofa to change the channel if their remotes were broken.

Nuffield Health director Sarah Dauncey commented: "Ready-meals, remote controls and even internet shopping are all contributing to a dangerously lazy and idle Britain."

She added: "If we don't start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most rudimentary of tasks."

The study named Glasgow as the UK's most idle city after 75% of people questioned there admitted that they do not get enough exercise. Birmingham and Southampton came in joint second place with 67%, while Bristol, London and Leeds made up the rest of the top five.
