A rap about the H1N1 virus has reached the final of a competition for the best swine flu public service announcement from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The track by John Clarke is the latest "health hop" song by the doctor, who has previously penned rhymes about asthma, teen pregnancy and diabetes, the New York Daily News reports.

Clarke said: "When I found out, I was like wow. This is really cool, that the US government is actually endorsing a hip-hop video!

"I try to just find a clever way to present the topic to make it interesting. The beauty of rap is it allows you to relate a lot of information in a short time."

The rap starts: "H1N1 Swine flu infection/ For intervention I bring prevention/ Dr Clarke here I come/ to make your head numb.

"Health hop lesson one, to stop the bedlam/ If you think you're infected seek attention/ If you have it stay at home so you don't spread none."

The winner of the contest will be decided on September 16. The maker of the clip with the most votes will pick up $2,500 (£1,500) and have their video aired on national television.
