Students at a school in Germany have been asked to return around €15,000 (£13,700) that they found in an envelope.

Two boys and two girls between the ages of 10 and 13 found the package on their way to their Frankfurt school and proceeded to hand out its contents to other children in the playground, AFP reports.

However, another child spoke to a teacher and all the children were asked to return the cash.

A police spokesperson said: "But since some were quite pleased by their new-found wealth, with many already making plans for what they would spend it on, collecting the money proved to be harder than handing it out."

A total of €12,000 was collected by teachers before police arrived, with the figure rising to €14,040 after another appeal.

The possible owner of the money was identified as a 33-year-old Afghan man from Offenbach using passport copies and an application for a Chinese visa also found in the envelope.
