A man has been caught at a security checkpoint after allegedly trying to smuggle gold out a jewellers in northern Johannesburg in a cooked chicken.

Police spokesman Bongi Mdletshe said that the employee has been refused bail while police try to discover his potential customers, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Following the incident, the head office of South African jewellers Browns asked the female staff at its Dunkeld workshop not to wear underwire bras.

General manager Belinda Phillips said: "Employees were informed about these measures beforehand, and were asked to refrain from wearing any metal due to the extreme sensitivity of the new metal detectors."

Earlier this year, police in Peru acting on a tip-off discovered nearly 5kg of cocaine being smuggled in two live turkeys.
