Journalist Dan Simmons cracked the screen of the Sonim handset during a BBC News video interview with the company's chief executive Bob Plaschke at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Plaschke told Simmons: "You can drop it from at least ten storeys. You can drop it in the water 20ft for half an hour if you want to go down that far with it.
"You can hammer a nail with it, it is basically unbreakable. And if you find a way to break it, we're going to give you a free phone."
Simmons said: "Bob has actually challenged me that I can do pretty much anything I like to this phone and it won't destroy it, so let's put that to the test."
He then submerged the phone in water before smacking it repeatedly against the side of the tank, cracking the screen.
Plaschke said: "You've actually broken the screen! That's impressive, that's really impressive."
