Town removes 'crawling drunks' sign

Officials in a Romanian town have removed road signs warning drivers of drunk pedestrians after "excessive" media coverage.

The Pecica authorities had installed the signs, showing a crawling drunk figure holding a bottle, after a "despairing" number of accidents, The Daily Telegraph reports.

A statement from Mayor Peter Antal on the official town website read: "Following the excessive coverage of the road signs the local government decided to change them.

"We had consultations with representatives of Arad County Traffic Police and we decided together that this indicator be changed to new ones warning of 'Other Dangers' which are in the road."

Ten of the red road signs had been installed near the city's bars and restaurants.
