A matador has been arrested and fined after he jumped out of the ring at the start of a bullfight.

According to local media, Christian Hernandez, 22, was charged for breach of contract when he fled the arena of the Plaza Mexico to a chorus of boos, The AP reports.

Hernandez was persuaded to re-enter the ring by officials, with video footage showing the torero with his hand over his head and pointing to the heavens before leaving again.

Speaking in a TV interview, Hernandez said: "There are some things you must be aware of about yourself. I didn't have the ability, I didn't have the balls, this is not my thing."

It is believed that the bullfighter was severely gored in the leg several months ago in a previous fight. Hernandez has since announced his retirement from the spectacle.
