ABC News reports that Arthur Schumacher, from Raleigh, spent a whole day driving to three banks in order to secure $17,885 (£10,933) in dollar bills for his wife Jeanette. His longest trip was 40 miles to the nearby city of Wilson.
He said: "I'm not supposed to be driving right now, so my daughter was driving me and my wife was asking me, 'What are you doing?' And I just said, 'Don't worry, I'll be back'."
The couple, who celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary last week, first met in December 1958 when they were set up on a blind date. They married in 1962 when he was in the middle of a 30-day leave period from the US Army.
"The first time I saw her, I thought she was beautiful, I thought she was great," Arthur added.
When presenting Jeanette with the money, Arthur realised that he forgot to account for leap years in his calculations. He owes his wife $12 (£7).
