The official White House Twitter account is followed by more than 2,300,000 users of the social networking site. Brian Deese, deputy director of the National Economic Council, was taking questions when he noticed and responded to one critical comment.
"This WHO correspondence briefing isn't nearly as entertaining as yesterday's," user David Wiggs wrote on his page. While the message was not directly sent to the White House account, it did include the hashtags being used during the discussion.
Deese responded: "Sorry to hear that. Fiscal policy is important, but can be dry sometimes."
He added: "Here's something more fun," before adding a link which led users to the YouTube video of Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.
The track has been viewed more than 36 million times online thanks to the 'Rickrolling' craze, which sees users post the link disguised as something else.
The humourous response was well received by Wiggs, who added: "Unfortunately someone had already told me what it was before I hit the link."
