The survey, which was conducted by Esquire magazine and my-wardrobe.com, found that 23% of those who answered think visible underwear is a fashion faux pas for males.
Meanwhile, 12% of people voted for Diamante T-shirts.
55% of men and women polled believe that shoes are the most important accessory. The most popular footwear to wear on a first date are smart shoes (37%) followed by classic brogues (36%).
43% of those men and women surveyed by Esquire and my-wardrobe.com unanimously crowned Sir Paul Smith as the individual who best represents British style. David Beckham took second place with 20% and Steve McQueen third with 12%.
Esquire Editor Alex Bilmes explained: "British men do have an innate sense of style, and an attitude that sets us apart from other nationalities. Despite fickle fashion trends that come and go influencing the way we dress, it is great to see classic design and tailoring prevailing."
A spokesperson for my-wardrobe.com said: "The survey findings reiterate how British style is perceived today. The popularity of men wearing smart shoes and classic brogues has certainly risen over the past few years. Each season, the footwear offering is becoming more versatile.
"British men truly experiment with classic dressing and are not afraid to play with the rules."
