A plastic bag containing the sum was discovered in a lavatory in the city hall of Sakado, complete with instructions to donate its contents to those affected by March's twin disaster.
The accompanying note urged the bag's finder to help those in the country's worst-affected region, explaining: "I'm all alone. I have no future so let the people in Tohoku use it."
Sakado spokesperson Masumi Sekiguchi confirmed that the money will be given to the Japanese Red Cross if the donor fails to reclaim it within three months.
"There was no witness to the act and we cannot guess what kind of person has been involved," she said. "We were really surprised. We also feel thankful for such kindness."
Over 15,800 people were killed in the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
