Kevin Gaylor, 24, invited a college student he met on Craigslist to his home in Colorado Springs early on Wednesday morning, but his romantic plans were scuppered when his wife unexpectedly returned home before his date arrived.
In order to avoid being caught, Gaylor contacted police to report the woman as an intruder and told them that she was armed with a gun.
When five officers arrived and discovered that the pair had been communicating via phone calls and the internet, Gaylor spoke to them in hushed tones and asked for them to 'get rid' of his love interest.
According to Metro, Gaylor was arrested and charged with false reporting to police. However, he is likely to only face a fine over the misdemeanour due to his lack of a criminal record.
Gaylor's date had apparently travelled for over an hour in snowy weather to meet him.
