The British number one was due to play Robin Haase of Holland in the first round of the Swiss Indoors competition in Basel, but picked up the injury overnight on Tuesday (November 1).
Murray, 24, recalled: "I woke up on Tuesday morning, and I was really struggling to walk.
"It is something to do with the sciatic nerve, and they think I did it in my sleep. Maybe I was sleeping in a bad position."
Murray, ranked number three in the world behind Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, also had to drop out of the doubles with his brother Jamie. However, he remains hopeful of recovering in time for the Paris Masters and the ATP World Tour Finals later this month.
"Hopefully, I should be okay," he said.
Haase beat Murray's replacement Marco Chiudinelli in straight sets, 6-2 7-6.
