A Devon resident has painted a massive 30 miles per hour sign on the side of his house, in order to slow down traffic.

Tim Backhouse, from Bow, explained that he hopes the 15ft (4.5m) will cause traffic outside his home to drive at the correct speed. He said that speeding vehicles make it very difficult for him to cross the road to get to the local village shop.

"Bow has a shop 300 yards (274m) outside the village perimeter which a lot of pedestrians walk to," Backhouse told BBC News.

"There's no safe crossing point, the pavement runs out near a corner and it would be just about okay if vehicles did do 30mph, but they don't.

"Since we moved to the village two years ago, we've witnessed a few instances where people have almost been hit by vehicles."

Fellow Bow resident Stuart Hussey said: "All it is is a sign on a wall and if it works, great."

Backhouse added that he painted the sign in aid of Road Safety Week UK, but will paint over it on December 5.
