American Samoa defeated Tonga 2-1 to end a run of 38 consecutive losses. The victory was also their first in any official FIFA match.
Ramin Ott and Shalom Luani scored for American Samoa to give the team a two-goal lead in the World Cup qualifier clash, but had to hold on when Tonga halved the deficit three minutes from time.
The players and coach celebrated wildly when the final whistle was blown.
Coach Thomas Rongen said after the win: "Maybe we have a chance to do something special here beyond this one game, but let's enjoy this one right now."
American Samoa's last and only other win came in the 1983 South Pacific Games, where they beat Wallis and Futuna 3-0.
They are currently joint-bottom in the FIFA World Rankings. They hold 204th position, tied with nations including Montserrat and San Marino. Tonga, according to November's rankings, are 202nd.
American Samoa also hold the record for the heaviest ever international defeat. They lost to Australia 31-0 in 2001.
