The Muppets have been accused of promoting communist propaganda by a Fox network personality.

Eric Bolling, host of Fox's Follow the Money, objected to the anti-capitalism message evoked by the villain in The Muppet Movie, an oil magnate named Tex Richman.

"Liberal Hollywood depicting a successful businessman as evil? That's not new," he wrote. "We're teaching our kids class warfare. Where are we? Communist China?"

Dan Gainor from the conservative Media Research Centre, meanwhile, argued that there is a real danger of children being brainwashed by the cuddly creatures.

"This is a Muppet movie," he said. "The only thing green that should be up there on that screen is Kermit the Frog. It's amazing how far the left will go... to manipulate your kids to convince them, to give an anti-corporate message."

The film's star Jason Segel has previously claimed that The Muppets are "pure, sweet and innocent" and spread a message of tolerance.
