The unidentified Massachusetts man informed MSPCA's Small Animal Shelter of his sizeable collection last week, the Eagle-Tribune reports.
The hamsters had been kept in aquariums, buckets and Tupperware containers and were apparently well looked after.
"He started with one hamster, and there got to be more and more," shelter director Mike Keiley said. "They are all in good health and will make nice pets for people. There are just many, many of them.
"He was overwhelmed. At first, he wanted to keep a couple of them, but then he changed his mind."
The man had been keeping the hamsters for about five years and was said to be "emotional" about giving them up.
