German policeman 'without driving licence for 22 years'

A German policeman has been patrolling the country without a driver's licence for 22 years, it has emerged.

The unnamed officer, who hails from the former communist East Germany, was only permitted to drive tractors and motorcycles, according to The AP.

Spokesperson Bernard Wessner said that the oversight was discovered when the policeman had to get glasses and change his licence.

"The man was in the police force during the communist times when policemen did not necessarily do the rounds in a car," Wessner added.

"After the Berlin Wall fell, no-one noticed he didn't have a licence."

The officer now faces a fine and will be demoted.
