Pottstown Middle School in Philadelphia took the measure after tiring of "classroom disruptions resulting from ringing cell phones", which continued to occur despite a previous ban on the devices.
Starting from Monday (January 30) students caught violating the ban will be given an initial detention, followed by two more sessions and confiscation of the phone if they are caught again.
The move has been blasted by several local parents, with one mother telling Reuters: "I understand there may be a handful of kids that shove cell phones down their boots, but why does the handful have to ruin it for the other 600 students?
"But, I said to my daughter, 'It's a rule and we're going to follow it."
Students are still allowed to wear boots that lace up and usually have a snugger fit.
