A 64-year-old tub of lard discovered in a German pensioner's cupboard has been pronounced fit for consumption.

87-year-old Hans Feldmeier received the pig fat as part of a post-WWII aid programme in 1948, along with two tins of noodles and some milk.

The retired chemist took the lard to food safety agents in the country, who confirmed that it was still safe to eat, if a little tasteless.

Officials from the office of agriculture, food safety and fisheries in East Germany ruled that the lard was "of gritty consistency, difficult to dissolve and looked a bit old".

However, they said that "all in all, given its level of freshness and its material composition, the product is assessed as satisfactory".

The office added that it would stand up to today's definition of being fit for the dinner table.
