An 18-carat gold Rolex watch worth £21,000 has been found down a drain.

A 28-year-old roadsweeper, who does not wish to be named, discovered the expensive item amongst dirt near Leigh-on-Sea railway station in Essex.

However, instead of keeping the watch, the worker nobly handed it in to a nearby police station, reports PA.

PC Calley Mackay, of Essex Police, released a statement saying:"This was a highly unusual find and it's hard to imagine how something so valuable has not been reported lost or stolen by its owner.

"It is possible, seeing as the drain was near Leigh train station, that the watch was dropped by a commuter. If you recognise it and believe it may be yours, please contact me.

"However, through the serial number we do know a little about the watch's origins and will thoroughly check any claim to ownership, so only honest people need apply."
