The council knocked down and replaced the old brick shelter, despite the fact that buses no longer pass the stop.
Resident Valerie Richardson told Northern Echo: "How kind of Durham County Council to replace the old brick bus stop... with a nice bright, glass one complete with rubbish bin and timetable board.
"The only problem is the bus stop has not been used for more than two years. The council continues to waste money while telling us they need to make savings. Who does their research?"
Meanwhile, one frustrated Twitter user commented: "Five grand of hard earned taxes on a bus stop that's not even on bus route! Yey!"
In a statement, the County Council blamed a misunderstanding with bus company Arriva, but it is understood that it was informed the stop was no longer in use.
