The cathedral is to be demolished as it is 'beyond repair', reports BBC News.
The replacement cardboard cathedral will be 25 metres high, and cost NZ$5m (US$4.1m, £2.6m).
Work is set to be completed by December.
Anglican church officials said: "The Transitional Cathedral, to be made mostly out of cardboard tubes, will be built about 300m from the cathedral and is to last 20 years."
Conservationists have called for the decision to be reconsidered, asking officials to explore other options to try and keep most of the current structure.
