Nick Beheng was rushed to hospital after the incident. However, before doctors could operate on his torn heart and wounded chest, they had to enlist the help of a bomb squad after realising that the mortar round firework embedded in Beheng's chest was still live.
He came to have this mortar round in his chest cavity after he was shooting near his home on Saturday (May 26). He was shooting the fireworks out of a tube when one backfired, making a hole in his chest.
Newscore says that Nick tried to shoot two fireworks from the tube at the same time, causing the backfire and serious injury.
Paul Sommer, the Anoka County Sheriff's Commander, had never seen an injury like this before. He said: "I can't think of a case where someone was impacted by an unexploded device that penetrated that deeply into their chest cavity."
Beheng remains in a critical condition in hospital.
