The 37-year-old was arrested and charged for riding without lights on the wrong side of the road while intoxicated.
Police stopped the man on Sunday afternoon in the central German city of Braunschweig and smelt alcohol on his breath, the Bild newspaper says.
After being released on bail, the man returned a few hours later with his car and smashed into the front of the police station he was taken to.
The man, who was still drunk, suffered serious injuries and had to be cut loose from his wrecked car by rescue workers.
Though no officers were hurt, a police car was seriously damaged.
