Bear wanders into shopping mall - video

A wild bear terrified shoppers last week after making its way into a shopping mall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The 57kg black bear used the automatic doors to enter the mall, and ran up and down the aisles of a store, the BBC reports.



The young bear, apparently only a year and a half old, then got stuck between two automatic doors in the mall's lobby, and was shot with a tranquilliser dart by local wildlife authorities.

Wildlife conservation officer Matt Kramer talked to WTAE.com about the incident: "We've created a situation where we've built the mall - we being people - in an area that maybe is traditionally inhabited (by) bears, so we've kind of moved in on their territory, and they're unfortunately moving back on our territory,"

WTAE also reported that another bear was seen a couple of days later, but has not yet been caught.

Kramer said they would attempt to lure the bear into a trap, using junk food as bait: "We're talking Ding Dongs, we're talking Mini Muffins, we're talking anything that would make this trap attractive to a bear."
