Research showed that 'babe' alongside 'muffin' and 'pumpkin' are the pet names found to be a turn-off, Yahoo! reports.
The research also discovered that American nicknames such as 'baby girl' and 'baby doll' are also hated by Brits.
However, more traditional names like 'lovely', 'beautiful' and 'gorgeous' are likely to prompt a more positive response.
Research also found that only one in five Brits call their partner by their full name and that the same number use a secret nickname that they only use when they are alone.
The male participants in the study admitted to using a number of names for their partners when they are out of earshot. Names like 'The Mrs', 'The Wife' and even 'The Boss' are used by British men.
The research also uncovered the fact that 3% of British men would use the unflattering name 'The Wicked Witch of the West' whilst many use 'The Ball and Chain' to refer to their other half.
