Devin Bost claims that he was given braces at the age of 7 by his orthodontist Brad Chvatal, and that they were not removed until Bost was 18 years old.
Bost is suing Chvatal for $185,000 (£115,000), ABC News reports, with $150,000 (£93,000) of that being for pain and suffering, and $35,100 (£22,000) to cover the cost to Bost of repairing the damage to his teeth.
Braces are usually left on teeth for around one to three years. The president of the American Association of Orthodontists Dr John F Buzzatto said that it was "extremely unusual" for braces to be left on for as long as Bost claimed.
However, Buzzatto did say that in some cases a patient may need longer treatment lasting up to "five or six years".
When contacted by ABC News, Chvatal declined to comment due to privacy laws but did say that the situation was "very complicated."
