The 3-year-old Jack Russell named Chopper was in the cab of his owner's van when an unknown perpetrator decided to take the vehicle from the Texaco garage in Read, Lancashire.
After being missing for over six hours, the dog returned to his owner's backyard unharmed. Ecstatic by his return, his owner rewarded him with a meat and potato pie.
Owner Debbie Wallbank told BBC News: "I'm so relieved he's back. I've not let him out of my sight since."
The white Ford Transit van is still missing.
Anyone who sees the vehicle is asked to contact the police.
