Mayor Bloomberg sign language interpreter becomes viral star - video

An interpreter for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg became an overnight internet star earlier this week.

Lydia Callis was seen behind Bloomberg providing sign language for his address to the East Coast during Hurricane Sandy.

Her extravagant and flamboyant hand gestures and facial expressions led to her becoming a hit across the web and social media.



A special Tumblr page dedicated to her appearance has been set up, titled Lydia Callis's Face.

Viewers across social media supported her appearance, including one user writing: "Shush, everyone, Lydia Callis is signing. (Also, that Bloomberg guy is talking.)"

Callis was also praised for providing a moment of amusement during a tragic time, which saw Hurricane Sandy becoming one of the most expensive natural disasters in US history, with estimations that the damage will cost around $20 billion.
