Father-of-two Dan Urbano, who was reluctant to get a pet, made what he thought was a failsafe bet - his children could only get a cat if their appeal got over 1,000 'likes' on Facebook.
However, in just a week the picture of the children's plea received over 117,000 'likes'.
The image showed 7-year-old Remi and his 1-year-old sister Evelyn holding up a sign reading: 'Hey Facebook! My sister and I REALLY want a CAT! Our Papa PROMISES we can get one if we can get 1000 LIKES! Please like this picture thank you!'.
The picture was uploaded by the kids' mum Marisa.
Speaking on Good Morning America, she said: "We figured our friends and maybe their friends would be nice and kind and share with each other.
"Never, ever did we think this was going to happen."
As promised, the Urbano family got a cat. The tabby, from Gifford Cat Shelter, has been named Hairietta L Pawturr. The family said they added the 'L' because she got so many 'likes'.
