The 1995 release from the Britpop stars reached 11 in the UK charts on its initial release, but was reported to have gone platinum after the band's guitarist posted a photo with a platinum disc on his Twitter feed.
Chris Gentry said on Twitter last week: "Nuisance by Menswe@r goes WW Platinum. Thx to everyone who made it possible."
Digital Spy were among the outlets who flicked back our Britpop fringes and excitedly posted the news without getting on the phone to the BPI. However, it later emerged that Gentry had in fact made up the accolade.
A source close to singer Johnny Dean told Holy Moly that he made inquiries about the report - believing that he was owed money if the record had sold so well.
In fact - Gentry apparently bought a fake platinum disc on eBay.
The prankster later quipped: "This is amazing. I'm V funny :) It was just some office lols that got out of hand. We've all been there... "
We had checked the BPI website and found it lacking any mention of the Britpop legends, but we dared to (day)dream that perhaps they were just waiting to update it.
Menswear split in 1998 after their second record ¡Hay Tiempo! failed to secure a UK release.
