The flightless bird had escaped the attention of its owner when it was spotted on a street in Barnstaple.
Authorities were called to the scene at around 8am this morning (November 28), where they managed to detain the 4-foot animal and put it inside a patrol vehicle.
Devon and Cornwall Police acting sergeant Zoe Panell said: "The owner wasn't sure if it was let out or if it managed to escape.
"My colleague had to pick it up and put it in the back of the car. It was a bit scared, and it made a mess in the car, but the owners offered to clean it up afterwards."
Parnell also commented that the situation was strange because they "never had training for dealing with an emu".
