11-year-old Cade Scott, from Sunderland, wrote a message on the back of a Doctor Who postcard and with the help of his dad, sealed it in a wine bottle and threw it to sea at Roker, Tyne and Wear.
The boy's message read: "I love Dr Who. If found, please send back with your name and address and how old you are. Cade."
When he received a reply from 25-year-old Matthew Eltham, 17 months later, it was clear just how far his message had travelled, reports The Telegraph.
Eltham replied: "Hi Cade, thanks for your postcard. I found it whilst celebrating Christmas on the beach in Perth, Western Australia! Happy New year."
It is thought that the journey, nearly 10,000 miles, is the longest distance travelled by the message in a bottle.
