Peter Leach from Glasgow was enjoying the scenery at Arthur's Pass last Wednesday (January 30) when a Canadian couple told him that the kea - a native mountain parrot - took something from his camper van.
He had left the windows of his vehicle open, reports the Scottish Daily Record.
"I went back to the vehicle and realised my wallet was gone," said Leach. "The bird took all the money I had. I was left with £20 in my pocket."
When the 52-year-old reported the incident to authorities, the police officer couldn't help but laugh.
Leach recalled: "The officer was very serious for the first few questions.
"Then he said, 'Do you mind if I just stop to laugh?' - I suppose I can't blame him."
