Te'o alleged this week that his girlfriend - whom he had been led to believe had died of leukaemia on the same day as his grandmother passed away - had been invented by an online prankster called Ronaiah Tuiasosopo.
A source has now claimed that Tuiasosopo tried out for the new season of The Voice, Us Weekly reports.
"He had this insane sob story before [he sang]," the insider said. "It would make for great TV."
The source alleged that Tuiasosopo claimed he and his cousins had been involved in a "massive" car accident on the way to a performance, which everyone had survived despite doctors being concerned that one of them was brain dead.
Tuiasosopo reportedly passed a background check and psychiatric evaluation on The Voice, with the source adding that "no suspicious behaviour" emerged.
However, the insider added: "People now think the sob story is fake."
Tuiasosopo is thought to have performed 'One Day' during his audition for The Voice, although he failed to make it through as none of the judges turned their chairs around.
The new season of The Voice - featuring new coaches Shakira and Usher - will premiere on NBC in March.
