BBC Three is to explore the world of extreme phobias in a new six-part series starting next month.

The Panic Room features a self-contained and enclosed space, which uses projected images and state-of-the-art light and sound techniques to bring each phobic's darkest fears to life.

By confronting their phobias in a controlled environment, the programme aims to help the phobic face and ultimately overcome their fear in three days.

Two psychologists, Dr Lucy Atcheson and Dr Felix Economakis, have devised The Panic Room treatment process and will use techniques including cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnotism.

Dr Atcheson, a Harley Street consultant, counselling psychologist and psychotherapist, believes that when it comes to phobias a direct and determined approach is the only way to get results.

She said: "The way I treat phobias is through cognitive behaviour therapy which is very successful, as it takes the person out of the sphere of irrationality back into the rational. The Panic Room is an excellent treatment for phobias. It actually presents them with graded steps of their phobic objects so they can really confront their fears in a controlled safe way."

Psychologist Dr Felix Economakis, a specialist in hypnotherapy, will also assist in treating the phobics.

"Everything done in The Panic Room proves to a person that they can control their inner response. It is enough to challenge them without overwhelming them," he said.

The show airs on April 10 at 9pm on BBC Three.
