The 24-year-old plasterer serenaded his dance teacher Dee Bennie-Marshall, who was dubbed "Rob's mum" on the programme. Dee had stepped in at the last minute because Rob's mother Elizabeth was unable to attend due to illness, but she told producers who she was in advance.
Producers have acknowledged their error and plan to send a letter of apology to Rob's family, who are demanding a clarification for viewers on tonight's episode.
"We just couldn't believe it when this other woman came up with 'Rob's mum' next to her," his aunt Carol Elliott told the Daily Star.
Dee added: "Rob lived with us for a while and may on occasions have called me 'Mum'."
A BBC spokesman said: "As far as we are concerned Rob refers to this woman as Mum, but a letter will be sent to his family."
