Shipwrecked is returning to Channel 4 next year after an absence of over four years.

The original show followed a group of castaways as they established their own community on a remote island.

The revamped series will see the 'contestants,' all aged 18 to 23, split into two groups. Each will live on adjacent islands, where they will "establish rival communities, competing for a cash prize."

Stephen Lambert, director of programmes at production company RDF, said: "Shipwrecked was one of T4’s most popular programmes and we are delighted that Channel 4 have asked us to make a new series on a much larger scale than before."

Filming will take place over five months this summer before airing as a 20 x 60-minute series on T4 early in 2006.
