An Italian priest has claimed that Wayne Rooney and Coleen McLoughlin's wedding has "no validity" in the eyes of the Catholic Church.

Father Mario Ostigoni said that the monastery where they wed in Genoa hasn't been eligible for a Catholic wedding for several months.

Rooney and McLoughlin's ceremony, which was conducted by Father Edward Quinn, took place last Friday.

Mr. Ostigoni told Metro: "The Bishop of Chiavari is not at all happy with what happened and I should imagine that Father Quinn's local bishop in Shrewsbury will also want to know what happened.

"If he did carry out a blessing or some form of religious event then it was wrong and it has absolutely no validity in the eyes of the Catholic Church and in the eyes of the Lord."
