Tom Hanks has lost a lawsuit against a builder who he claimed made a mess of renovating his home.

Hanks and wife Rita Wilson sued the Idaho contractor for $2.5 million over work done on their Sun Valley home in 2002.

However, the judge dismissed the case because the couple had already taken the contractor to arbitration in 2003 and lost.

Hanks's representative Leslee Dart told TMZ: "Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson intend to appeal the judge's decision.

"This is not a petty dispute where Tom and Rita are trying to squeeze money out of a small, local contractor. There are serious design and construction problems that should never have happened, but did, and now need to be fixed."
