Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, was convicted in March 2006 of committing "obscene acts" with two 11-year-old Vietnamese girls from the coastal city of Vung Tau. He has completed a 27-month sentence.
His lawyer Le Thanh Kinh told Reuters: "My client is a free man now but he will be escorted straight to the airport to go back to London. He should arrive there by tomorrow."
Kinh said Vietnamese police handed Glitter his passport at immigration in Ho Chi Minh City, adding: "He doesn't have much luggage."
Glitter will fly to London via Bangkok, with immigration officials warning that he will be turned back as an "undesirable" should he attempt to enter Thailand.
